Chapter 1
The Right Amount of Fear
Interconnecting systems create fragile states
Relationship, network, collaboration, creativity
Is fragility a necessary catalyst for growth?
Surrendering to fragility
Always healing
Learning each other and holding safe space for each other
Share, listen, call, respond
Do constraints define the work?
Improvising on a theme
Always restarting
Opening yourself to create fragile states
Break ice, breathe deep, find knots, feel fear
What is the opposite of fragile?
Making your own maze
Always beginning

Part of our working process as a group has involved long interviews with Braeden, given their work in radio media. When we were talking, topics of trumpet techniques came up, and moved outwards towards what it meant to take risks and put one’s self out there as a performer. This initially started as just sound, but pairing the trumpet improvisation with text and A/V quotes gave it a whole other layer of sense and nonsense. Riffing off of little bits of language from our interview has allowed me to think through what intent, gesture, and process mean when creating and even living, and is something I want to fold into our project as it develops, especially by sharing that interrogative space with the audience. As a certain part of this gives away, that’s not always a serious space, but even flippant, extra responses might push us in new directions. As we move forward, I’m interested in seeing how our discussions and actions run in parallel, rather than one simply being the result of the other
fragility and strings

The exploration of fragile states has allowed me to play with various movement ideas. Through improvisation, the most interesting is the unknown. As I begin to move, I let my body take charge and allow my mind to succumb to the various pathways filled with twists and turns that my limbs take. When the end outcome of the process is uncertain, there is a certain amount of fear, as Ben puts it, the ‘right amount of fear’. Vulnerability fills the process, keeping in mind that it is a safe space.
The idea of the strings tied from branches of a tree is inspired by the fragility of the unknown. Through entanglements, complex weavings and intricate movement patterns, I feel the delicacy of my body as it navigates its way through the strings.
