Our Residency Program
Nomadic Soundsters is seeking community-oriented creatives of all genres and media for the Nomadic Soundsters Residency Program. The Nomadic Soundsters (NS) Residency is a year-long online program focused on the process of creation and collaboration. We provide a virtual space and structure that allows creativity, collaboration, and connections to flourish. Residents are placed in small groups of artists with complementary interests, availability, and work style to create a collaborative project. Our residents have the opportunity to participate in exclusive workshops led by guest artists, create and lead a workshop in their area of expertise, premiere works to be showcased across the web, and expand their network of professional artists.
While many residencies focus on the product, we focus on the process. By having an extended timeline of one year, Nomadic Soundsters residents have the time and space to develop meaningful connections and explore the co-creative process. We ask residents to provide works in progress, drafts, notes, scrap paper, sketches, and audio and video clips along the way, so that we can showcase this process and reveal to the public how art comes together gradually.
The Nomadic Soundsters Residency Program takes place entirely online in our Discord server, so you don’t need to uproot your life to join. Residents are asked to engage (through text chat or video calls) with their group at least once per week. Outside of group work, we expect our residents to show up to monthly “feedback loops” where all groups have the opportunity to show their work in progress and garner constructive feedback. The Nomadic Soundsters residency is designed to be flexible so it can fit into any schedule and time zone! Our residents have joined us from the US, India, Germany, Japan, and more! Throughout the year, the Nomadic Soundsters team organizes community-building events that residents are expected to participate in. To maintain a community, members need to show up!
By completing the residency, artists become an official, lifelong Nomadic Soundster. As a member of the community, Nomadic Soundsters have the opportunity to collaborate on future projects, partake in educational outreach activities, contribute to the NS blog and vlog, and become a mentor for future residents.
Applications are open to artists of all disciplines ages 18 years and older. All residents will be required to sign and adhere to a Non-Discrimination Policy Statement upon acceptance into the Nomadic Soundsters Residency Program. Please also refer to our Diversity and Inclusion Statement at the bottom of this page.
To apply, follow the instructions below.
Application Process
-
Step One
Please answer the following prompts via a video recording (no more than 7 minutes):
Why are you applying for the NS Residency Program?
Briefly tell us about any previous collaboration experiences that you have had.
Briefly describe your ideal collaborative project.
Provide a brief verbal artistic statement.
-
Step Two
Upload your video to a file-sharing service (e.g. WeTransfer), online storage (e.g. Dropbox, Google Drive, OneDrive, etc.), or video platform (e.g. Vimeo, YouTube). If you use a video platform, you can make the video unlisted so that only those with the link will be able to see it.
The video recording does not need to be perfect or polished in any way; recording on your phone and/or via Zoom is fine. We just need to know you have some basic form of audio/video recording capability so you can be an active member of our virtual community!
-
Step Three
Submit the link to your video file via our contact form. Make sure to select the “Residency” option in the dropdown menu under Categories and put “NS 2023-24” in the subject line.
Applications will be reviewed by the NS team. Candidates who best fit the NS ethos will be invited to an interview. From there, the core team will select the NS residents for this year’s residency and notify them of their acceptance by May 7, 2023. The residency will officially begin on May 14, 2023.
