Talakadu

Talakadu is a conceptual video art project that invites viewers to examine their responses to climate change through collective remembering and collective dreaming.

The project is inspired by the desert-town of Talakadu in Karnataka, India. Once a bustling city, Talakadu is now buried under sand dunes, and folklore ascribes it to the curse of Rani Alamelamma of Srirangapattanam. In the video, the viewer experiences fragments of memories and dreams of their encounters with the natural world. It is set to the haunting lyrics and music of the song “The Way I Needed to Be Loved.”

The project is a reminder of all the reasons why the work, effort, and grief of fighting climate change is worth it.

Ideas forming…

  1. Home is complicated. Everything happens there, because it is the base so even when you travel you’re taking your experiences back home with you and processing them there. It is filled with the best feelings like love and comfort and security but also the worst like heartbreak and deception and doubt. When I’m away I’m longing to be home, and when I’m home I’m longing to be elsewhere.
  2. Knick knacks. Heirlooms. Art work. Pictures of people you love. Books you’ve read. Craft supplies. Board games. Instruments. Nice speakers. Organization system unique to your brain. Extra toiletries for guests. Snacks.
  3. Might be taking this a bit too literally, but you walk through the door. And know where all of the light switches are. Have a trusted water filtration system, so you’re never dehydrated when you’re home. The couch / chair is comfortable. The shower makes you feel clean.
  4. Your home should reflect your character and be familiar to you, which is sometimes tricky because it might not be the most exciting place ever for that reason. Other spaces exist for different purposes and though some might be similar (community hang out, hotels, office), they don’t have that thread of connectivity and history a home encompasses.
  5. Home is important to me because I love to be comfortable. I cherish the moments at the end of the night where I can do my deep relaxation routine, light a candle, and exist without and responsibility or threat to my being. Home affords me the ability to rest. It is also a space where I can create and experiment artistically without judgement (for the most part, roommates) and really let loose. Home is an introvert’s paradise.
  6. Unfortunately, under capitalism we have to work for home. It is not a basic human right although it needs to be. There are a lot of people without a physical home in the manor that I’ve laid out, even though they do a lot for it. I work 40 hours a week for home. I drive far from events at the end of the night to go home. I clean even though I hate it, but i want it to feel like home. I go shopping for home decor and tend to plants to live in my home with me.
